T 646 Seam Tester
|
|
by Prof. Herbert Henne, Reutlingen University |
|
 |
-
Tests the quality of stretchable seams in knitwear.
-
Determines the amount of stretch required quickly and practically according to a preset tensile load.
-
Provides reproducible specifications between manufacturer and customer.
|
Seams in stretch fabrics (knitwear) usually break because they fail to withstand the tensile loads which arise as a result of incorrect settings. This manually- operated grab tester can be used on the finished product to check whether the seams meet specified or agreed minimum requirements for tensile strength and elasticity. Its maximum force of 100 N means it can also be used to determine the shear strength or slip resistance of fabrics. |
 |
|
Other
applications
include:
-
Determining the behavior of textiles,
elastic and elasticated fabrics under strain.
-
Checking waist sizes at a specified
tensile load.
The T 646 seam tester consists of two sets
of easily adjustable pincers which can be opened and closed with minimum of
manual effort and reach right inside finished garments to grip seams firmly.
One of the two sets of pincers is located on a free- running rail- mounted
slide. The movable set of pincers is pulled by hand over a cylindrical spring
balance. Tensile strength is measured on the spring balance and distance
(elasticity) is measured on the rail. The clamping parts on the upper arm of
the pincers are hinged and have a clamping width of 25 mm (about 1 inch),
which corresponds to the British grab method. |
 |
Apart
from the
actual
grabbers,
the
lower
arm of
the
pincers
contains
rubber
pads
which
together
with the
hinged
upper
clamps
ensure
that the
tester
is
firmly
embedded
and
grips
seams in
the
required
range of
force
(at
least
100 N).
During
the
clamping
procedure
each
clamp
can be
locked
at a
distance
of 5 cm,
7.5 cm
and 10
cm from
the
fixed
clamp.
The 7.5
cm
position
again
corresponds
to the
grab
test
method.
The
smallest
clamping
distance
is 3 cm.
With the
clamps
open,
annular
seams
(e.g.
cuffs,
fly in
underpants)
can be
pulled
over the
lower
arms of
the
clamps
and
subjected
to
tensile
load.
The
outer
surfaces
of the
lower
arms are
rounded
for this
purpose. |
 |
In the
basic
version
as
described
her the
tester
is 50 cm
in
length
and
weighs
about 3
kg.
The
tester
can be
supplied
up to
100 cm
in
length
if
required
for
checking
waist
sizes
(At a
specified
force).
